Gavriel in Israel

In Israel there is a youth group called Bnai Akiva.  It is a Jewish thing that you can go to on Shabbat afternoons.  I love it and I find it really fun to go to.  There you can make a lot of friends and laugh with them, cry with them and just have a good time with them.  I go to Bnai Akiva on Shabbats and it is really fun to be there and sing songs and see your counselors who you might like.
That's all for now.

Gavriel in Israel
This is a summary of everything that I have not written about in the past month.  School has been the same.  I really like my regular class, which I go to on Fridays.  I have a few friends in my regular class who I like very much.  On Fridays my class also goes to the Yeshivat Hesder next door to my school for t'filah, which I also like very much.

On Shabbat afternoons I go to B'nai Akiva with a friend from my regular class.  At B'nai Akiva I see my friends from my regular class.  Afterwards, we go to a park together until Shabbbat is over.  Then we walk home.

The Chagim have been good.  I have had a good time on break.  Now it is Sukkot.  Over chol ha moed, we got a bird. It looks like this:

The day before we got our bird, we went to to the beach.  There were fish in the water!  But unluckily (for me) I was not able to catch any.  We went with my Aunt and Uncle and my Cousin.  The day after we got our bird, my Savta came to visit from Portland!!  I was very excited when she came.  The day after she came, we walked with her to Kaiser Center and bought chocolate-filled croissants and rugelach at the Lalouche bakery.  Then we walked with her to a park.  After that, Ima picked us up and we went home.

The next day was Shabbat, and I had a little fever.  So I did not do much, except for sit on the couch and feel blah.  I feel better today.

Well, that brings us up to date!

The First Day of School

Gavriel in Israel

On the first day of school August 17, we walked to school and it is really only a 10 minute walk.
School has a bell and when the teacher comes in you have to stand.  That morning we had an assembly because it was the first day of school.  After we had snack and after that we had recess.
School ends at 12:45pm and on Fridays 11:45am.  That's all I have to say.

Today we are going to sleep at the apartment in Modiin.  We really did not do anything until we went to kabbalat shabbat.  After kabalat shabbat we went L and K's house for dinner.  They have two kids and they are both younger than me.  Before dinner Kate wanted to give their dog a walk.  We went to the park to give the dog a walk.  When we got back we went and had dinner.  After Ezra and M played doctor and patient.  Ezra said in the game he was bitten by a Russel's Viper which is one of the most deadly snakes in Asia.

The second most deadly snake in Asia
After that we went back up, we had some dessert, and after we went to sleep at our apartment in Modiin.

The friend is a friend of my Ima named Aliza and her husband Todd.  They have three kids they are younger then me.  We went to the park  which has a big climbing structure.  There we all played games and just played around.  After we had dinner with Aliza and it was spaghetti and ravioli stuffed with cheese.  It was a good dinner.  After dinner we played a little bit more.  Then we went home.

Pool time again

Gavriel in Israel

On Sunday we went to the pool in Ramat Rachel at a kibbutz.  we went with some of my Ima and Abba's friends:  Yael and Ariel and their kids.  We went on the slide as the first thing and it was fun.  Then I had a lunch of tuna and smoky cheese. It was tasty.  then we went to the middle pool.  After around 10 or 20 minutes we went to the slide and I can still remember banging from wall to wall. But it is still fun.  Then we went to the third pool and played tag and catch and then we went to the slide again and this time til the end of our time there.  After we went down the slide another 30 times we went home.  But we all agreed it was a good day spent at the pool.

Shabbat in Chashmonaim

 Gavriel in Israel

On Friday we went to our cousins' house for Shabbat.  We slept there.  It was really good.  I learned how to play a new game, Abalone.  It is quite fun.  My brother and I also played chess, but it wasn't any time of chess, it was Romanian chess.  It was fun.

Shabbat morning, I tried a new type of cereal.  It was puffed wheat with brown sugar and honey.  It is really good.  Then we went to shul.  After shul we ate lunch.  Lunch was chicken, it was good.  Dessert was an Israeli Otter Pop, but it is a lot smaller.  A few hours later, there was another kid around my age who came over with his friends, and his friend's mom.  We went and played.  When we got there, they called out all the other kids on the block.  We had a Bimba race.
At the end of the race, a Bimba went over my ankle.  It scraped away a little skin, I bled a tiny bit.  But I didn't go home.  Then we went to the boy's house.  We played Beyblade, but that turned out to be a disaster and my brother and I wanted to go home, so we did.  When we got back our parents weren't there because they went on a walk.  We both had a cookie and we talked and read.  Then our parents came back.  We had dinner.  Then after dinner, we went on a walk with my cousin Eti.  My brother and I ran around in the middle of the street and we tried to surprise our Ima by running out and yelling "Charge!"  It was fun.  I also tried to be a ninja.  When we went back, Ezra and I went in their hammock.  Then we said havdala.  Then we went home.

Gavriel in Israel

On the 16th it was Abba's birthday.  In the Morning we gave Abba a clue and the clues were a scavenger hunt and the treasure was a box with beans in it and after he took all the beans out of the box He found 9 of his favorite things.

In the afternoon we went to the old city tunnels.  It was awesome!  In the tunnels there were many sites to see and you get to walk through an aqueduct and a cistern.
After we went to El Gaucho we got the mixed meat for 2 to 3 people.
Here are some pictures from El Gaucho.

At El Gaucho I had soda and the I got Sprite and I burned myself but just because I burned myself does not mean I can't enjoy my steak.

On the 15th of August we went to Ein Yael.  At Ein Yael I made a cup on a pottery wheel.  It was fun but hard.  After pottery Ezra and I shot a bow and arrow.  Looking at what other people did I think that I did the best because I got the arrow in and so it was straight.  After that we had lunch.  After we had lunch we went and Ima made a pan flute for Ezra.  After the pan flute making, we made pita and after it came of the fire I picked it up and burned myself.

Art Fair

Gavriel in Israel

Yesterday we went to an art fair.  It only lasts for a few weeks and it is only in Jerusalem.  It is next to the Old City.  The first thing we did when we got there was look around.  Not long after we looked, we found something that we all liked.
We are going to put it in our apartment in Modiin.

Then we went to a little play in Hebrew in the kids' area.  It was called "Tom the Giant".  It was not that good, we left in the middle.  Then my Abba got tapped on the shoulder and asked if he wanted to join a minyan for mincha.  And he said "Yes", and I thought it was cool that there are people around in random places that if they can find enough Jews for a minyan, they'll have one.  I think it is neat.  After that we got some food.  This was like my experience in the food court.  Except much easier, because as soon as my Ima said "Would you like some fish and chips?" Ezra and I immediately said "Yes".   The fish and chips were fish sticks and french fries, but it was still good.

After that we looked at art from all around the world.  It was fun seeing how different people have different things.  Now I know that Argentina has good marionette puppets.  After we looked at all of the art, we went to take a seat for the concert.  The concert was by Eviatar Banai.  While we were waiting for the concert, I saw something moving in the air, I looked up and it was a bat.  Before the concert started, Ezra and I saw at least 50 bats.  The concert was awesome, although we did not get to see the whole thing because it started at 9pm, and we left around 10pm.  So we saw at least half of the concert.

Gavriel in Israel

On Monday we went to a national park called Ein Hemed. There is a playground there as soon as you get out of the car.  The swings there have backs to them which is why I think they are very good swings.  The seesaw there also has backs to the seats, you can fit four people on it.  Each seat has a door so you do not fall off.  While we were there, Ezy found a little pond, but you are not allowed to go in it.  We saw frogs, tadpoles, and dragon flies.  Here is a picture of a frog that I caught.
I am not hurting the frog, just holding it.

We took a little walk and at one point there was a little stream and my brother and I chose to follow it.  There was a bridge and my brother and I went under it.  Our parents told us to get up and have lunch, but instead of lunch we did something else.  We went to the crusader farm.  It is over 1000 years old.  It was cool.  Then we had lunch. After lunch, Ezra and I finally got to follow the stream to the end.  It was fun.  Then we followed it back.

Then we went to our apartment in Modiin.  We started to unpack and put things into our dresser.  The reason we had to go there was not to put things into our dresser, but was to wait for the washer, dryer, and fridge to come.

The way they brought the appliances was they carried them on their backs.  That was all that happened that day.

It's Haifa Time

Gavriel in Israel

Yesterday we went to Haifa.  The way we got to Haifa was, first Ima drove to Modiin, and from Modiin we took the train to Haifa.  The reason we had to go to Haifa was, if we wanted to get our shipping container we needed to sign a few things so we can get it without having to go to the dock.  Next we went to the Carmelit .  On the Carmelit we rode to the science museum, called Madatech.  It was really fun.  The first thing we did when we went inside was we went to the Leonardo Da Vinci exhibit.  My favorite part of that exhibit was the pedal powered spinning wheel. I thought that was excellent.  After that we went and saw a demonstration of how you can put a skewer through a balloon without popping it.  As you can imagine, there was a lot of balloon popping involved.  After the demonstration we went to a room with optical illusions.  After that we went to a room that was like the physics lab in OMSI.  After that we went to a magic room.  In the magic room, I lay on a bed of nails, pretended I was only a head,  made liquid go up and down in a bottle,  and made a hat move without touching it.

After the magic room we went to an aircraft room, my favorite part of the room was getting to fly a miniature helicopter.  It is much harder than it looks. When we went outside, I pulled a boat, picked up a barrel, and flew in a helicopter.

That day in Haifa was well spent.  We went back home on the train.  We went to a restaurant for dinner.  The food was very good.  After that we got the keys to our apartment.  By the time we got home it was 10pm.  I usually go to bed at 8pm, so I was very sleepy.

Two days ago we went and bought almost all of our school supplies, except for books and some other stuff.  It feels like Harry Potter, having a book list and going to the mall to buy everything from certain stores.  In Israel, there are different school notebooks with different numbers of lines on each page.  I needed 14 line notebooks.  I thought it was weird.  We thought that if we had also bought school books, our load would be twice as heavy.  My brother has the most school supplies, but I have more school books.  Here you have to buy your own books for everything.  We have to bring our own siddurim, we don't get them from the school like at PJA.  In school my class is going to be studying Shmuel aleph.  I am excited.

Gavriel in Israel

Today we went with Eti and Baruch, my Ima's first cousins.  We went with them to four places.  The first place was a winery.  We took a tour but we ended up leaving because it was sort of boring.  The second place we went was to the Lone Oak.  As soon as we got to the tree, I spotted a lizard on the tree, but when it went into a little nook in the tree, we couldn't see it again.  Baruch wanted to have us guess how old the tree was.  I guessed 1 million, but I was very far off because the tree was only 600 years old.

The next place we went was a spring.  The springs came out into little pools which are too deep for me to stand in, except for one which was only to my ankles.  After we were done looking at all three of the springs we went and had lunch there up at the picnic tables.  My lunch was the same thing I had the day before (for information read the blog post old city/ramparts walk).

After lunch we went to our fourth and final destination of the day.  It was an aqueduct.  We got very little flashlights which are very bright.  If you didn't have a light, you couldn't see in the aqueduct because it is pitch black.  The deepest the water gets is 80cm.  This is up to my waist.  After we completed the walk, which took us about 20 minutes, the way to get out was a ladder.  Of course I wanted to go first, I was afraid of heights, but you could not look down because if you did you would slip.  Everyone who goes up that ladder has muddy feet and hands.  Once I got up that ladder, I noticed there was another ladder to go up, but that one was very short.   Once I got out I looked around and said "We're in the middle of nowhere!" because I couldn't see the path.  Then I found the path and started walking back.  Then we all had ice cream.  My ice cream was a Magnum Gold.  There was one thing I found out, the gold on it is like paint because when you touch it it comes off on your finger.  It is still very good, I suggest having it.  Then we talked a little.  Then we left.  It was fun to meet my first cousins-once-removed.

When we got home, I had a shower.  After my shower I had some chocolate milk and then I started writing this blog post.

The Old City/Ramparts Walk

Gavriel in Israel

On Monday the 6th of August we went to the ramparts walk in the old city.  The ramparts walk included many flights of stairs, up and down.  It is very high, and unfortunately, I am afraid of heights.  That walk was not the funnest thing for me.  After the walk we went to the Kotel.  It was very fun although we did not get to touch it.  Afterwards we went and ate lunch.  My lunch was a tuna fish sandwich with smokey cheese.  It was really good.  I suggest having it.  After lunch we went and had ice cream.  I wanted soft serve, but they didn't have any, so I ended up having cookies and cream chocolate and vanilla because those are the flavors of the soft serve I had wanted.  After we ate our ice cream we started to head home.  All of us agreed it was a fun day.

Gavriel in Israel

On Thursday after the three days of not learning anything.   My parents decided to write the camp and  see if there could be teachers at recess and less violence.  The next day I went back to camp and the kid that got kicked out for almost choking another kid was back, no better then before.  The email my parents wrote did nothing and they said to me and my brother that if we get hit we don't have to go back.  Guess what happened?  Somebody threw rolls at me, hard, and another person threw a piece of tack board at me on purpose.

My New Books

Gavriel in Israel

I have come up with two new ideas for books.  The books are called, "Faint" and "If".

Faint is about three friends who are walking at recess and a teenager on the playground faints.  Above him is a cloud of green and black smoke.  There are more attacks throughout the week.  It is a fantasy-mystery book.

If is about a scientist who uses the word "if" too much.  Everything he says "if" about an invention that is possible, he is able to make it.  There is a saying that I made up to go with the book:  Live by the word "if", die by the word "if".

Those are my two book ideas.

Camp Horrible

Gavriel in Israel

This post shall tell you about the first 3 days of Camp Horrible.  The first day was horrific. There are hardly any  nice people, there are no clocks in the rooms, so you have to bring your own watch, and in one class the teacher says that if you don't speak, write, understand, read, and listen, you don't know Hebrew.  No one in my class agrees.

The next day, I figured out that this is a camp for people who don't know Hebrew at all.  The good part about that day was that someone said something very rude about my family, and I almost pushed him onto the pavement.  That day, he got expelled.  That was a good day.  The rest of the day my friend and I sat in our chairs with looks of triumph on our faces.  On the bus ride home, we were saying "He's out! He's out!" and were very, very happy.

Today, we were going to go swimming.  We got changed, then the teacher didn't use his common sense because he didn't notice that both pools had lessons going on in them.  So, we ended up changing back into our regular clothes and going back to class.  In class, I did not learn anything for the third day in a row.  After recess we had the same teacher as we did before recess.  And again I did not learn anything.  The next period was weird.  We had a different teacher and we were learning about nature.  We went into a little place in the back of the camp where there are goats, turtles, birds, and rabbits.  I fed the goats from the other side of the fence because I am allergic to everything with fur.  On the way back to class the teacher littered, which was strange because she says she loves nature.  What a hypocrite!

Rat Update

Gavriel in Israel

One day the rat got into the room with the washing machine and it was at night and Ima caught it and tossed it in a bag onto the porch. The next morning it was dead.  On Thursday the other rat got in again and I saw it this morning and we haven't seen it since.  So that's all for the rat update.  Stay tuned for more furry news.

Zoo Time Again!!

Gavriel in Israel

Sunday, we went to the biblical zoo and we had a blast first we got our own membership cards and saw some monkeys then we went and saw some pelicans, flamingos and many other birds.  Then, we went to the kangaroos and were able to get very close to them.  There was a cassurary in an exhibit next to the kangaroos.  The cassuary can kill people.  It is a good thing that it was not out on the loose like the kangaroos.  We then went to see the peccary and there was a little baby peccary, and it was very cute.  It was also very small.  After we saw the peccary, we saw birds.  We went into the bird house and to our surprise, instead of birds there were bats and only two birds.  The tawny frog mouth and another that was a type of pigeon.  Then we saw tapirs, caybara, and mara.  Then we came to the playground in the zoo and Ezra and I played on the structures there.

Then we went to another part of the zoo and had ice cream.  I had the same type that I had when we went swimmming.  Read all about it in an earlier post.  It was good.

Gavriel in Israel

On Shabbat night we went over our uncle and aunt's house for dinner.  They were also hosting Shimon, his daughter, and his dog.  His dog's name is Tahoma, and his daughter's name is Devorah.  Dinner was chicken, soup, salad, and a yummy dessert.  Unfortunately I was very tired, so of the yummy dessert, my dessert was an ice cream cone, which was still very tasty.  I went home with my Ima while crunching on my ice cream cone.  By the time we got back, the ice cream cone was gone.  I fell asleep almost instantly once we got back.  It was a good night.  I slept until 9am, and so did my brother.  I went out into the living room, expecting my Abba to be there, but to my dismay, he was already at shul.  So I just lay on the couch, and then my brother came out.  He lay on the couch too.  Then our Ima woke up.  We had breakfast.  We didn't go out until we felt like we should go pick up our Abba from shul.  When we did, he said he was just about to leave.  Then we went to Uncle Yoni and Aunt Meesh's house for lunch.  Lunch there was good, again!  It was salmon, lasagna, noodles, Parmesan, and tomato soup.  Dessert was ice cream, but this time in dishes.  I had chocolate and cherry-chocolate-chip.  It was good.  That was the fun part of my Shabbat.

On Friday the 20th, we went swimming with our cousins Leora and Shalom.  My Abba came along too.  We stayed at the pool for four hours.  At the pool, to get used to the water, we went to the kiddie pool.  Then once we got used to the water, we went to the big pool and started playing a game we made up, called Shark.  The game has two humans and one shark.  The shark has to swim and try to catch the humans.  If the shark touches you, then you are "dead" for 10 seconds before you can go back into the game.  When almost all of our lips were blue, we went out of the pool to have snack.  The snack was apples, pretzels, oyster crackers, and soy-sauce crackers.  Then we went into the pool for round two.  Again we started off in the kiddie pool, and when we got used to the water we went into the big pool.  Abba did not go in, but all of us kids did.  This time, we convinced Leora to play shark, and she was the shark.  When she got you, she tickled you.  So I had a plan.  When Leora wasn't looking, I dove into the water and tickled her feet.  Every time I did it, she tickled me, but she never saw me coming, which was good.  When we had to get out of the pool, we had to dry off and get ready to go.  The good part about going was we got to have ice cream.  So while we waited to get picked up, we ate our ice cream.  My ice cream was a Magnum Chocolate, it is like a fudgesicle covered in chocolate.  When our ride was there, we all piled into the car and went home.

The Plane Ride!!

Gavriel In Israel
This post is all about me and my family going on a plane and coming to Israel.
We had to leave the house at 5:45am to get to the airport on time.  When we got to the airport we needed to check in. When we said we had 12 bags they were a little surprised and when they saw we were moving to Israel it made it more clear.
After we checked in all 12 bags we went and had some hot cocoa and after we finished drinking we went
through security. Now I'm going to fast forward to when we were on the plane.
On the plane we had a fun time.  On the plane I played my DS almost the whole time but then Ezra wanted to play on the DS.  So I got the iPad and he got the DS.  Then we had to trade because Ezra couldn't figure out how to play the game on the DS.  I read a little and played tons more.  When we got off the plane in Philly we had a 5 hour layover until our next flight.  We bought some snacks and ate lunch.  Then we walked around to see where our gate was and where we could eat dinner.  Then we heard on the speaker that there was a play area very close, so we went.  It wasn't that fun, so we walked back and had our dinner.  Our dinner was those ramen noodle soups.  Finally we went to our gate, and we went through security.  Then we waited until we had to get on to the plane.  When we got on the plane, the flight was 11 hours.  The good part was there was a screen in front of us, and we watched lots of things, movies and TV until we went to bed.  The dinner on the plane was not that good.  The next morning, we watched Alvin and the Chipmunks, Chipwrecked.  It is fun, but I wouldn't want to watch it again.  After we finished the movie, it was about time to get off the plane.

After we got off the plane, we went up the stairs and there was a guy holding a sign that said "New Olim" and our name was on the sign, so we waited with him.  We had to check in and then we went to an office.  We waited there for around 2 hours but there was a TV there that was showing a soccer game.  Ezra and I were so good that one of the ladies there gave us candy.  It was really good.  When we got out we got all our luggage and put it all on carts.  We pushed it out and then we saw somebody holding a sign.  It turned out to be Larry and Kate and their children.  It was a nice surprise.  Then we had to go outside to wait for our taxi.  It was a long wait.  When the taxi finally came we loaded all our stuff in, said good-bye to Larry and Kate, and got into the taxi.  Somebody came with us that was also a new oleh.  We dropped him off first.  Then we were dropped off. It felt good to be back home in Israel.

Gavriel's Awesome Blog

I found this in my saved work and this is actually the last post before I go to Israel.
You will want to hear this!
On Friday the 30th of June  I went to the zoo with my family and it was really fun.  Right when we got there we saw the two mountain goats and we walked through the black bears to get in to the main part of the zoo.  We saw all four black bears and one of them was on top of the cave. They are supposed to sleep in it not on top of it.
Once we got in to the bigger part of the zoo we first went in to the cougars, but they were asleep.  Then we went to the Family farm and saw the pigs, cows, and goats. There was a zoo teen letting people pet a tortoise.  After that we went to Lorikeet Landing but I didn't go in because I wanted to look at the tigers.
Afterwards we went to Africa and saw all the giraffes, naked mole rats, and zebra.
After that we had a lunch of cream cheese bagels and a dessert of chocolate chip cookies.
After lunch we went to the primates and saw almost all of them, but the special part was we saw the ocelot and the tree shrew.  That made my day!

Gavriel's Awesome Blog
Here is some more news.
On June 27th, my brother, our Uncle Boaz, and I had a sleep over. Boaz took us to WK12 and showed us around.  It is one of the coolest offices I have ever been to.  If you work there you can get free soda and have free arcade games and best of all you get to work with some of the nicest people around.  In WK there is also a gym and there are all sorts of things there like yoga classes and shoot hoops.
When we had dinner, we watched Chicken Run and it is awesome. After dinner we had ice cream on Boaz's apartment building roof. It was fun.
The next day we went back to WK and we met one of the people that work with Boaz, Megs.  They work on a podcast called
"Boaz and Megs in the Morning". It is an awesome podcast.  Boaz wanted me and my brother Ezra to be on the podcast and Megs was up for it, so we went and recorded.
After we finished recording we saw a pinball machine, Ezra and I played on it.  Then Ezra, Boaz, and I went to the gym.  We shot a few hoops and hulahooped until we got tired. Then we went to the excellent coffee shop called Barrista.
At the coffee shop we saw another twelver; Blakly and his wife Vivian.  We chatted and after a while Ezra and I had to go home.

Second post of the day.

Here I am again with more interesting news.

The second week of summer I went camping with my Grandpa, my brother Ezra and my Grandpa's friend, Bill.  When we were camping on the fist day we went fishing and when we were fishing it started to pour on us and there was thunder but no lightning.
The next day me and Ezra used a hatchet to chop up some fire wood so we could make a fire with it. Here are a few pictures of me using a hatchet.

Using the hatchet was really fun especially when we finished we made a fire with all the fire wood we chopped up with the hatchet.  Each night at the camp site geese came to the camp site and we would feed the geese graham crackers and when we ran out they would try to bite us.
Bill took us to two water falls and they were called Sheer falls and White river falls.  They are both magnificent.

   That's all for this post.

Gavriel's Awesome Blog

The move that I am about to make on July 11th is going to be the biggest move I have ever made but it will also be hard for me.  It will be hard because all of my friends are in Portland, Oregon and now I'm moving away to a new school with new people that I probably don't even know.  It'll be hard on my Family in Oregon because flights to Israel are really expensive.
But the good part about moving to Israel is that I have lots of family there and the candy is a lot better in Israel especially the gummies.

I'm also writing a book that I am hoping to finish some time in 2014 but who knows?  The book is called "The Loyalty of Friends"  I am hoping to write another book and I have not made a title for it.

This is all for now, I'll be writing again soon.
